Members of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) are voting today, Friday, June 24, 2022 to elect new executives.
The more than eight hundred members of the Association in good standing are expected to cast their ballots in the election which stalled for almost two years.
The elections originally scheduled in October 2020, stalled as a result of disagreements amongst members which later culminated in a series of Court days.
With all the outstanding issues which included integrity of the voters’ register resolved, the election is being held simultaneously at all designated polling centres across the country. It will elect into office new executives who will steer the affairs of the Association for the next three years.
46 Candidates are contesting out of which eleven are vying for six national executive positions, which are President, Vice President, Treasurer, General Secretary, Organizing Secretary and Public Affairs Officer.
Three candidates are contesting the position of President, they are the Editor of the Ghanaian Times, Dave Agbenu, a Communications Consultant Gayheart Mensah, and Albert Dwumfour, the Head of Communications of the Tobinco Group.
The incumbent Vice President, Linda Asante Agyei, as well as the current Treasurer, Audrey Dekalu, both of the Ghana News Agency (GNA), are going unopposed with their position.
On the ballot for the General Secretary, position is incumbent Kofi Yeboah of the Wisconsin University and is being keenly contested by Akwasi Agyeman of the Multimedia Group.
The Public Affairs position is a two-horse race between GBC’s Rebecca Ekpe and GNA’s Caesar Abagali.
The Organizing Secretary position, is also being contested by Dominic Hlordzi of GBC and Daily Graphic’s Mary Mensah.
Ahead of the polls, aspirants for the various positions have been making last-minute campaigns to solicit votes from members.
The mandate of the current GJA Executive ended on November 17, 2020.
