The President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has revoked the appointments of all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) as well as appointed Assembly Members nationwide.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, from the Office of the President, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development was directed to ensure compliance with this directive.

The letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, emphasised that the revocation takes immediate effect.

To ensure continuity in governance, the respective Coordinating Directors of the affected Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have been instructed to assume responsibility as acting Chief Executives until substantive appointments are made.

This development marks a significant change in local government leadership across the country. It remains unclear what prompted the sweeping revocation, but it signals a potential restructuring of local governance under the current administration.

Observers and political analysts speculate that the move may be part of a broader effort to align the leadership of local government institutions with the President’s vision for decentralisation and rural development.

As the country awaits further announcements on new appointments, the Office of the President has called for cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition at the local government level.
