President John Dramani Mahama has suggested that privatizing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) could be a solution to the country’s electricity challenges.
Speaking at a meeting with a World Bank delegation in Accra on January 8, 2025, he said involving private companies in managing ECG could address problems such as inefficiency, financial losses, and poor service. He believes this step could modernise the energy sector and improve its performance.
President Mahama reflected on Ghana’s work with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact during his time as Vice President, emphasising the importance of reliable electricity for economic growth. He assured that any decision about ECG’s future would include discussions with stakeholders to protect public interests while ensuring better services.
“If we don’t fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, the entire power system will face problems. Bringing in private sector expertise could help,” Mahama stated. He added that he plans to seek support from the World Bank to guide this process.
This proposal is part of broader efforts to make Ghana’s energy sector more efficient and sustainable.
