Deputy Commandant at the Ghana police academy, ACP Dr. Gustav Yankson, has called for a collective effort from policy makers, civil societies, advocacy groups and other entities towards championing the fight against Cybercrime in the country.

He said although Cybercrime was a complex issue to eradicate, adopting best practices in policy formulation, research and academia, collaborations at the international levels and victims support was crucial to mitigating the practice to its barest minimum.

The commander said this at the 12th Dowuona-Hammond memorial lecture organized by the 1995 Winneba Old Students’ Association in Accra.

The Dowuona-Hammond memorial lecture has been a Hallmark event in the academic calendar, honoring the legacy of the revered founder of the Winneba Senior High School while addressing contemporary issues of national and global importance.

The theme for this year’s lecture focused on “Fighting cybercrime in the 21st century: The role of civil society.”

The lecture delved deep into Cybercrime, causes of the menace, and it’s impacts on national and global transformation.

At the end of the lecture, it was concluded that cybercrime cannot fully be eradicated in Ghana because the country is not inventive enough to build applications, thus the cyber space is dominated by foreign powers and the way to curb the menace is to be inventive.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy Commandant of the police Academy ACP Dr. Herbert Gustav Yankson called for a collective effort from stakeholders to champion the fight against Cybercrime.

He said adopting best practices and inventing new technologies is a way to control cyber bullying in Ghana.

The Member of Parliament for Okaikoi Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah who was the chairman for the event expressed satisfaction over important steps taken by Government to curb cybercrime in the country.

He shared some insights on the Cyber security act of 2020 act 1038.

The event saw the awarding of citations to key members of the association.

Notable among them was ACP Dr. Herbert Gustav Yankson Deputy Commandant of the police Academy, member of parliament for Okai koi central Patrick Yaw Boamah, Captain Victor Kofi Dukuh among others.
