Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson Dafeamekpor, says Ghana may experience food crisis, especially in Lower Volta communities next year due to destructions of large tracts of cultivable lands in the Volta region.
The region holds a significant chunk of the food supply for parts of the country, but have been submerged following the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.
The spillage flooded upstream communities claiming markets and other investments on riverbanks and wiped-out whole downstream settlements.
The MP, together with members of humanitarian organization, Lions International, on a tour of the flooded Tongor Dzemeni Market, highlighted the loss of farm produce due for harvest.
Mr. Dafeamekpor, said the loss has come at a season when farmers expected a bumper harvest.
He said it is time for the central government to act.
The MP showed the members of the Club, the devastations, adding, its economic and social impacts have hampered family lives and academic progress.
An estimated five thousand people from 12 communities in South Dayi have been displaced, while more than 300 homes remain underwater.
Lions International presented food items, toiletries and other essentials to support the relief efforts.
