Residents of Tema Community 25 are appealing to the IGP, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Works and Housing Ministry to as a matter of urgency step in to stop the sale and development around the Tema Community 25 District Police Headquarters.

The residents say the Community Police Station was built by the people and there are plans to expand and build a Police Barracks for Officers posted to the station but the TDC has allocated the space to a private developer.

Residents say they woke up to see a private developer working on the space reserved for the Community Police Extension and Barracks and upon enquiry it came to light that the Tema Development Corporation, TDC, has given out the space to be developed by a private individual who is also a resident there.

The Residents Association led by its Executives say they have written letters to all appropriate institutions to take action but to no avail.

The private developer has begun work by digging trenches around the Community Police Station, in effect blocking the Community Drainage System.

Wearing red arm bands, members of the community came out in their numbers to stop the ongoing development and covered the dug trenches.

Some of the residents who spoke to GBCNEWS said it is inappropriate to develop an area earmarked for a security facility such as a Police Station and for other social amenities.

An Executive Member of the Residents Association, Mr. Michael Kumah said all available space designated for recreation and as an assembly point in times of emergency have all been sold out and there is the need to protect the remaining space for the safety of the Community.

The Tema Community 25 Police District Headquarters serves communities in Tema and Kpone and also protect national installations like the Kpone Thermal Plant and residents say “the  Police Station must be preserved”.
