Canada is preparing a robust response to President Trump‘s planned tariffs, which could include cutting off energy supplies to the U.S. Starting February 1, Trump intends to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, raising concerns about escalating trade tensions. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated, “Everything is on the table,” emphasizing that Canada will act decisively to protect its economic interests.

Trudeau’s administration is contemplating countermeasures, including retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods. The Canadian economy heavily relies on trade with the U.S., making this potential conflict particularly damaging. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has expressed opposition to using energy as leverage, complicating Canada’s unified response strategy.

Canadian officials argue that halting energy exports could significantly impact the U.S., which depends on Canada for a substantial portion of its energy needs. As tensions rise, Trudeau aims to negotiate a resolution while preparing for potential economic fallout from Trump’s tariffs.

The looming trade war has prompted Canadian officials to consider targeted tariffs that would minimize domestic harm while maximizing pressure on U.S. industries. With the deadline approaching, Canada faces a critical decision: retaliate or seek diplomatic solutions to avert a full-blown trade conflict.

  1. With Trump’s shock and awe maybe it would take a Canadian equal response to make him realize the importance of us Canada trade relationship and our lumber comes from Canada I put an addition on hold until prices came down.trump and his tariffs is rediculous

      1. One is starting the war. I think Canada’s response should be as strong as they can make it. You can’t talk business with a bully or a dictator. And we now have a dictatorship bullying every country, threatening not only tariffs but actual military action in two notable cases, to take other countries. Violation of international law. Do not bend to a dictator. That is how we will all be broken, not an option!

  2. It is all well as the USA has tremendous timber assets. It is hard to complete when the government doesn’t change for stumpage

    1. We Canadians will not be bullied by a convicted felon. No, we will not just do what trump says. On Feb 1 if trump introduces a tariff of 25 % we will have to cut energy to America.

      1. Do it, and then join the European Union, as has been suggested, if it’s possible. Do not deal with this dictator.

  3. I hope Trump does not put any new tariffs on Canadian products. We get a lot of our oil, electricity and lumber from Canada so any new tariffs would just make it more expensive in the US for the average citizen. Let the commerce department decide what the tariffs should be with our trading partners. Right now the US puts a 14.5% tariff on Canadian lumber since they feel the lumber is too cheap coming from Canada. The Canadian government owns most of the forests in Canada. Canada has way more timber than the US with only about 1/8 the population so it just natural that we use more of their timber before it gets too old. We get a lot of electricity from Canada that is produced by economical hydropower, so that is very beneficial too us.

    1. February 1 you may not have any electricity. In the dark and cold. You can thank your so called president for these actions. Good luck

    2. The dictator only cares about himself. Prices going up is directly contradictory to his campaign “promises”, which were lies and anyone with half a brain knew it.

  4. When you put a tarriff on something, they will raise the price to sell it for. Therefore the consumer is paying the tarriff. The other country is not goi g to pay it without raising prices, would you? Trump is being bully and beating his chest like he’s standing up for us, but we are going to pay it. Wtf???

  5. Be strong Canada. Do not let trump push you around. He is destroying our country do not let him destroy you as well

  6. Trump is a convicted felon. He’s belongs should be in a prison cell. So thank him when the power goes out

  7. Trump has no respect for our most trustworthy allies. Unfortunately. an idiot is running the show. He will leave everything broken in his term and the following administrations will be picking the pieces.

    1. He has no respect for his allies or the American people. He’s a bully, he has no interest in anyone but himself and his billionaire buddies.

  8. The dictator only cares about himself. Prices going up is directly contradictory to his campaign “promises”, which were lies and anyone with half a brain knew it.
