The World Health Organization has announced a new naming system for variants of Covid-19. It will use Greek letters to refer to variants first detected in countries like the UK, South Africa and India.

This is to simplify discussions on the disease and help remove stigma from the names. The UK variant for instance is labeled Alpha, the South African Beta, and the Indian Delta.

The Indian government has criticized the naming of the variant first detected in the country last October as the “Indian variant”, though WHO never officially labeled it as such.
