{"id":327892,"date":"2024-07-27T13:34:27","date_gmt":"2024-07-27T13:34:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gbcghanaonline.com\/?p=327892"},"modified":"2024-07-27T13:36:35","modified_gmt":"2024-07-27T13:36:35","slug":"air-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gbcghanaonline.com\/news\/health\/air-pollution\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Household air pollution contributes to chronic diseases among pregnant women and children- Health expert"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By: Godfred Amoaful<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A clinical epidemiologist and Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kintampo,_Ghana\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kintampo,_Ghana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kintampo<\/a> Research Center under the Ghana Health Service\u2019s Research and Development division, Kweku Poku Asante says there is enough evidence from research conducted on households that use biomass for cooking compared to those that use LPG that household air pollution such as smoke made during cooking when using biomass increases the risk of contracting non-communicable diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said smoke that is emitted from the use of firewood and other solid energy for cooking affects an individual\u2019s blood vessels and also leads to hypertension among them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that when pregnant women cook with solid energy, the pollution results in increasing the risks of blood pressure also among them. Again children who are exposed to carbon monoxide\/ household air pollution during pregnancy, develop impaired lung function at the age of four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf they are exposed to carbon monoxide, especially in their last trimester, it leads to impaired lung function at the age of years.
