Speaking on Nhyira FM, he recalled a warning from Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in 2017. The Ashanti king had cautioned President Akufo-Addo that the previous government fell because of hunger and anger, warning that history could repeat itself if similar conditions persisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the NPP failed to address the economic struggles of Ghanaians, leading to voter disappointment. He noted that during the 2024 campaign, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia did not receive the usual warm welcome, a sign that people were losing trust in the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The former Suame MP suggested that if the elections had been held in August instead of December, Bawumia might have secured only 30% of the vote, as economic conditions were worse earlier in the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Other factors that contributed to the party\u2019s defeat included perceptions of corruption, leadership issues, and internal conflicts. Many believed the government was controlled by a small group, making decision-making seem disconnected from the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the Ashanti Region, which has traditionally supported the NPP, dissatisfaction over infrastructure neglect and factional disputes weakened voter support. Additionally, some voters saw Bawumia as too closely linked to Akufo-Addo, making it difficult for him to inspire confidence as an independent leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized the need for the NPP to reflect on its mistakes and introduce reforms. He noted that although many party supporters expressed frustration, they might still back the NPP if real changes were made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Regarding Dr Bawumia\u2019s political future, he stated that the Ashanti Region did not vote against him because of his religion or ethnicity. However, feedback from other regions would determine whether he remains a strong candidate for future elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He also admitted that choosing Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh (Napo) asDr Bawumia\u2019s running mate was meant to unite the party.
