The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), is bringing viewers a special throwback to reminisce all the childhood memories of the 1990s. The Corporation is readying to entertain its viewers with the famous Journey to the West TV series, premiering Sunday, September 10 at 3 p.m. If you never sneaked out from Sunday children’s service to have a peek at Shiifu, then without a doubt, you missed a whole lot. It was captivating, full of adventure, and rib-cracking humour. It made a lot of kids choose first service over second service on Sundays. This is a good opportunity for people, especially those who were born in the 90s to share a piece of their childhood with the younger ones.

Recently, there has been a public outcry about the need for the state broadcaster to bring back some of the entertaining shows from the 1990s on its screens. Among these shows is the Journey to the West TV series. The public has been yearning for this, and GBC did not turn a deaf ear to that. Because it is a public broadcaster which has the opinion of the public at heart, it has therefore listened. If not number one, Journey to the West ranks among the top ten vintage TV programs all Ghanaians loved. Journey to the West is one of the greatest classic Chinese movie series ever created. It was loved by many, and as kids, many just could not wait to watch the movie. The series was first aired in Ghana on GTV on Sunday mornings in the 1990s. Some members of the public shared their captivating moments of the series.

“We miss Journey to the West; please bring it back on the screen, and we will start to pay the TV licence fee,” GBC fan on Facebook.

“Way back, we used to prank our parents that we not feeling well just to be able to watch Journey to the West. I remember when the monkey used to take a stick out of his ears. We’ve really missed that series and many captivating ones on GTV.”

“Like GTV Ghana, you have really entertained a lot of us when growing up ooo. I think we should all do our best to pay our TV licence as a way of appreciation.”

“Way back, it was like watching monkey personified—that is, watching a monkey in human form. It was very entertaining,” a member of the public.

Journey to the West is a 16th-century Chinese folktale based on the historical events of a monk’s 13-year travel or pilgrimage to the West. It became an instant classic in China and was praised for being one of the most original and faithful interpretations. The protagonists of the series are Shifu, who is the monk on the pilgrimage to the west, and his disciples, whom he picks up along the way: Wukong, the Monkey, Bajie – the Pig and Wujing.

GTV is to re-televise Journey to the West to offer viewers another chance to enjoy family time with this classic Chinese literature.

The movie was fun, but what made us love it was the character Sung Wunkong (Monkey King). He made the movie very interesting to watch. This is an opportunity for the Indomie generation to catch up. Some fans spoke to GBCNEWS about their expectations.

“Something special is coming out of journey to the West and I think my friends would love to watch it. I will love to watch is again because it was one of my favorite program of GTV,” a member of the public.

Wow, I can’t wait to watch Journey to the West on Sundays,” a fan said.

GTV will premiere the fun moments from the Monkey King on Sunday, September 10 at 3 p.m. The Director of Television, George Lomotey, speaks further on this new development.

“Sometime ago, GTV broadcast Journey to the West, way back when we were all kids, running from church to watch this program. At that time, it was just one season with 25 episodes, and that’s what GTV broadcast. But now there is a news season; that’s the second season, and the story talks about the journey back from the west. This time GBC has acquired the two licences, and we are going to bring all 25 episodes of season 1 and then all 16 episodes of season 2 to our audience. So in total, between September 2023 and somewhere January or February 2024, every Sunday our audience are going to enjoy “Journey to the West at 3 p.m.”

The state broadcaster is asking its lovely audience to catch the fun of Shiifu while taking up the opportunity to pay their TV licence fee. Mr Lomotey urged the general public to support GBC to create more content by paying their TV licence fee.

“Now we are appealing to our audience to also support the national broadcaster by paying their TV license fee. Yes it’s everybody’s civic responsibility but we cannot request for it with giving them the kind of content that they want,” the Director of TV appealed.

It’s funny, it’s got a lot of action, and it seeks to help you reminisce about all the childhood memories of the 1990s. A recap will definitely make you feel nostalgic.

It is the hope of the general public that GBC brings back the love to Ghanaians by showing more of its interesting content way back, like “Inspector Bediako”, “Things we do for love”, “Cantanta”, “By the fireside,, “Captain Planet”, “Kwasasa”, “Sun City”, and many others. This,  they believe, will drive the payment of the TV licence fee and more followers for the state broadcaster. They say they want their children to know the GTV Ghana they watched some years ago. The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation can do well to serve its audience when every individual honours their responsibility by paying the TV licence fee. This will help bring back the love.
