President Akufo-Addo has expressed profound gratitude to the Ghanaian media for its support under his presidency. He said the media has demonstrated great partnership and commitment, which has seen some of the government’s key policies disseminated to the citizenry.

Speaking at the 28th GJA Awards in Accra, President Akufo-Addo said he was excited to be a part of the event, giving the immense support of the Ghanaian media to national development.

“Just hours ago, I landed back in Ghana from the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. There’s been a demanding schedule engaging world leaders on critical global issues, but I knew that I could not, under any circumstances, miss this ceremony.”

Adding on, “I want to be here to celebrate with you to acknowledge the incredible work you have done and do and to say thank you.”

The president commended the media for its resilience and courage over the years, noting that its efforts have strengthened the country’s democratic achievements and played a crucial role in shaping society.

“Thank you for your resilience in times of adversity, for your courage in times of uncertainty, and for your dedication to telling the stories that shape our nation.”

President Akufo-Addo, who said he had been a victim of misinformation and character assassination, cautioned the media against ‘click-bait’ journalism, especially that which creates disaffection towards persons seeking political offices.

“I have been a victim of such vicious campaigns multiple times throughout my political career. In the run up to the 2008, 2012, and 2016 presidential elections, I was a target of numerous false and malicious stories aimed at attacking my credibility and integrity. In 2008, baseless allegations of drug trafficking were spread along with rumours about my health intended to cause doubt on my ability to serve as president.

Two months or so to the December 24 elections, they are at it again. A fabricated document entitled “Agyapadie” idea is being peddled around by operators of the opposition.”

President Akufo-Addo stated that deliberate disinformation campaigns pose a serious threat to Ghana’s democracy, emphasising the need for the media to avoid engaging in such practices.
