The Executive Director of the Africa Center for Energy Policy (ACEP), Benjamin Boakye has charged the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), to take pragmatic steps to end illegal use of electricity across the country.
He said apart from residential power theft, there is a concept called abortion metering where companies engage contractors to destroy their meters after failing to pay for electricity they consume for a period.
He explained that after the destruction of the meters the companies then apply for new meters to cover up the bills on the old meters.
This, Mr. Boakye said, must be stopped to ensure that ECG gets money for the power it sells.
He was speaking on the request by the ECG for tariff adjustment in Accra.
