The management of 7 Garrison Primary School in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region has organised a “Fruit Day” event to promote healthy eating habits, sustainability, and community engagement.
The event, themed “The Joy of Fruits: A Healthy Path to Learning,” aimed to educate students and parents on the many health benefits of incorporating fresh fruits into their daily diets and highlighted the
role of good nutrition in overall well-being.
Fruits are known to be a powerhouse of essential nutrients that contribute to physical and mental health. Nutritionists say a diet rich in fruits can boost immunity, improve digestion, and even enhance
cognitive functions in children.
Despite these benefits, fruit intake in many households across the country remains low.
The maiden edition of the Fruit Day event, organised by the management of 7 Garrison Primary School, sought to promote the importance of healthy eating habits and raise awareness about the benefits of
incorporating fresh fruits into daily diets.
The event’s theme, “The Joy of Fruits: A Healthy Path to Learning,” was reflected in a variety of fruit-themed activities, including fruits exhibition and tasting, fruit salad-making contest, a fruit
quiz competition, and unique fruits fashion pageant where students showcased their creativity by incorporating fruit-shaped designs into their costumes.
The Fruit Day celebration combined fun with learning as students and community members explored the vital role fresh fruits play in maintaining overall well-being.
The Headmistress of 7 Garrison Primary School, Mrs. Doris Acheampong, emphasised the importance of nutrition in the educational journeys of children and urged parents to include more fruits in their children’s diets. “We are very privileged to celebrate Fruit Day in our school.
The purpose of this celebration is to educate the learners on the benefits of eating fruits. I observe that many of the learners prefer consuming ice cream or sugary foods, which can affect their health,” she said.
Mrs. Acheampong added, “In view of that, we decided to organise this Fruit Day in a fun and educational way to encourage the learners to eat more fruits, which will improve their health and give them a
healthy mind for learning in the classroom. I urge all parents to continue supporting this goal by encouraging their children to eat fruit at home.”
The principal registered nutritionist at the 7 Military Regional School (7MRS), Mr. Juventus Kanyire Kuuntanaa, also highlighted the benefits of incorporating fruits into daily meals. He stressed the
importance of encouraging children to eat fresh, locally sourced fruits to support both health and environmental sustainability.
“Let us opt for fruits over sugary or sweetening beverages. Sugary or sweetening beverages provide what we call empty calories. They don’t add any significant nutrients, and even if they do, it’s minimal. So, instead of drinking sugary beverages, have fruit instead,” he advised.
According to the management of 7 Garrison Primary School, they plan to make this event an annual tradition and called for collaboration from stakeholders to support this cause.
