The recent re-appointment of Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson as Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) may face a setback due to a court injunction filing.
Mr. Kofi Clement Ohene Asare, an alumnus of KNUST, has filed an order of interlocutory injunction to halt the commencement of Prof. Dickson’s second term, set to begin on August 1, 2024. He alleges breaches of the University’s Statutes in her reappointment, overseen by former Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, Chairperson of the University’s Council.
Mr. Ohene Asare contends that the appointment process did not adhere to the required procedure, which involves constituting a seven-member Search Committee to propose candidates and advertising the vacancy for other applicants. He describes the university and council’s conduct in renewing the Vice-Chancellor’s appointment as “unlawful,” “illegal,” and “unconscionable.”
Despite these alleged irregularities, he claims that both the former Chief Justice and Prof. Dickson are intent on proceeding with the reappointment, prompting his request for an injunction. The Kumasi High Court is scheduled to hear the case and make a ruling on July 30, 2024.
