The Minority in Parliament has demanded the arrest and prosecution of the Directors of Lamens Investment Africa Limited and penalties for the Board and Management of the National Food Buffer Stock Company. This comes after allegations that they distributed expired rice to Senior High Schools across the country.
North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa accused the two organizations of working together to supply 22,000 bags of expired and repackaged rice to schools. He also pointed out that in 2021, Lamens Investment Africa Limited was flagged by the Auditor-General for providing bad food to schools, but the government took no action.
Speaking on Monday, November 18, Ablakwa, on behalf of the Minority, called for immediate action. He stated that the directors of Lamens Investment should be arrested and prosecuted, and the Board and Management of the Buffer Stock Company should be punished for allowing their facilities to be used in such a harmful act. He also criticized the operation of unregistered storage facilities by the company.
“This carelessness, which puts the health of students at risk for corrupt gains, must not go unpunished,” Ablakwa said.
The group also urged mass health screenings for Senior High School students to check for any health problems caused by eating the expired rice. Ablakwa criticized the lack of action from public health officials and called on the Ministry of Education to support the screening exercise.
