The 2024 Olympics qualifiers appears not to be raining success for the Ghanaian Boxers as five out of the seven have all lost their fights.
Ghana took seven boxers to Italy trying to secure qualification to the Olympic Games and so far five of them have all lost out. Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medalist, Samuel Takyi became the latest casualty, losing unanimously to his Japanese opponent.
Those out of the competition include the UK-born Mark Kodjovi Ahondjo (Heavyweight -92Kg) who was slated to fight today but because he couldn’t travel from the UK to Italy, his opponent got a walkover.
Jonathan Tetteh couldn’t meet his weight requirement and got disqualified. He was supposed to fight Light Heavyweight -80Kg but he weighed 80.60Kg.
Those who lost in the ring include Anatu Mohammed (Women’s Lightweight -60Kg). Referee Stopped Contest in round 1, Alfred Kotey( Light Middleweight -71Kg) and Samuel Takyi (Light Welterweight -63.5Kg).
Two boxers are still pursuing qualification and they Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey (Flyweight -51kg) and Janet Acquah (Women’s Flyweight -50Kg). Theophilus Kpakpo who won his first fight, fights again today against Tashi Wangdi from Bhutan.
