Effective December 1, all dialysis treatment regardless of age would be covered free by the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS. This follows the successful pilot of free dialysis for patients under 18 years and 60 years and above.
The Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced this at a Stakeholder Engagement at Suame in the Ashanti Region as part of his constituency-focused campaign in the region.
Dr. Bawumia said the move is part of government’s comprehensive plan to make dialysis treatment permanent on the NHIS benefits package. To this end, Dr Bawumia added that the government will procure new dialysis machines to support kidney patients in Ghana.
“Nananom, we have improved the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS. We have invested a lot of money into the scheme to ensure that a lot of illness such as childhood cancers can be covered by the scheme. Through the NHIS, children with the sickle cell disease can now access the medcation, Hydroxyurea for free. Kidney dialysis is very expensive and patients cannot afford. We took the bold decision to cover the cost for patients under 18 year and 60 years above. Now we have taken this decision to cover the dialysis cost for every Kidney patients effective December 1, 2024. We will also procure new dialysis machines to make this process successful”.
Dr Bawumia on Sunday, December, 10 took his campaign tour to Suame, the biggest constituency in the Ashanti region. The consistuency is considered the strong hold of the NPP.
The NPP won the 2020 Presidential election in the Constituency with more than 75 percent. With barely 27 days to the general elections the NPP Presidential Candidate was in Suame to canvas for votes for the NPP and the Parliamentary Candidate for Suame Constituency.
Dr. Bawumia, engaged with the traditional leaders, Pastors, Muslim clerics, Zongo Chiefs and opinion leaders in Suame Constituency. Dr. Bawumia explained how his policies will make life comfortable for every Ghanaian.
