The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has announced GJA’s participation in the Third Cohort of the Media Capacity Enhancement Program, an initiative of the Ministry of Information

Speaking at the Media Capacity Enhancement Programme on September 10, 2024, Mr. Albert Dwumfour explained that the initiative provides an excellent opportunity for journalists and media professionals to improve their skills in the ever-changing media landscape. The program’s first session, held in Kumasi, was launched by former Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah under the patronage of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.

Mr. Albert Dwumfour also recognized the dedication of the current Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar, who has been instrumental in sustaining the program. Her leadership has ensured that we are here today for the third edition. The Ministry and the Government deserve praise for their commitment to this initiative, which strengthens media freedom and equips the media to fulfill its critical role in society.

He pointed out that in today’s fast-paced media environment, accuracy and reliability are essential to maintain public trust. Journalists who receive proper training can better engage with their audience and produce trustworthy content. As the media landscape evolves with new tools and platforms like artificial intelligence, it is vital for media professionals to stay updated to thrive in this digital age.

He indicated that capacity-building programs such as this one are crucial in preparing media organizations for the future. “At the GJA we value ethics, balanced reporting, fairness, and professionalism, and training programs like this help reinforce these principles, building public trust and ensuring responsible journalism”.

In conclusion, he encouraged corporate entities to support the expansion of this program and foster a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing among media professionals. He also highlighted GJA’s proactive efforts, such as their partnership with the U.S. Embassy, where 152 journalists were trained under the Peaceful Journalistic Discourse Program to prepare for the upcoming 2024 elections.
