The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu who is also the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, has once again justified why it is necessary for the Government to tax Mobile Money Transactions which is the E-Levy.
Mr Kyei Mensah Bonsu, also justified why the Government abolished the collection of Road Tolls.
Speaking at a media briefing in Accra, Mr Kyei Mensah Bonsu said the E-levy is targeted to yield more than Eight Billion Cedis in a year, whereas the Road Tolls only yielded GHS 72 Million a year.
He emphasized that the E-levy is a panacea for development stressing that there is the need for the Government to introduce it.
Since the Finance Minister, Ofori-Atta announced the Government’s decision to introduce a 1.75% Levy on all Electronic Transactions, effective January 1, 2022, Ghanaians have been divided on this initiative.
Although the Government has argued that it is an innovative way to generate revenue, opposers, including the Minority in Parliament and some Economists maintain that the move will worsen living conditions of the people.
Mr. Kyei Mensah Bonsu also revealed that the Government owed Local Contractors to the tune of GHS 4.5 Billion.
Besides, Road Tolls cannot defray the indebtedness.
