Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the 2024 Bawumia campaign, has criticized those advocating for amnesty for individuals involved in the Democracy Hub protest.
The demonstration, held at Accra’s 37 Roundabout, spiraled into chaos as participants blocked roads, dismantled police barriers, disrupted traffic, and damaged property.
Aboagye, who leads communications for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign, spoke out after the Circuit Court detained 54 protesters, nine of whom are now in prison while the rest remain in police custody. The court’s actions have drawn condemnation from various groups, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the main opposition party.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program on September 30th, 2024, Aboagye expressed confusion over the persistent calls for the release of the arrested demonstrators. He compared these appeals to endorsing the protesters’ acts of vandalism and road obstruction, which affected access to a nearby hospital.
He remarked, “Those criticizing the police and demanding the release of the demonstrators should understand that the courts are simply performing their duties. Should we also ask for the release of rapists, armed robbers, and other criminals? Why should the lives of so many be disrupted by a mere protest of 50 people?”
Aboagye also criticized Oliver, one of the protest leaders, for his behavior during the arrest, questioning the example he set for younger generations.
