A Research Analyst at the Centre for Democratic Development, CDD Ghana, Gilfred Asiamah, has described the disturbances in Parliament on January 7, this year as a betrayal of the rule of law.

Speaking on our Current Affairs programme “Focus”, Mr. Asiamah said the confusion that characterized the whole event is a disgrace as it has dented the country’s democratic credentials since the MP’s are supposed to be role models for their constituents.

He said the apology from those involved in the act is not enough and therefore suggested that they should be sanctioned since no one is above the law.

Former Director of Communications of the NPP and past MP for Okaikwei South, Nana Akomeah, said the incident that happened in Parliament is regrettable and should not be repeated. He called for consensus-building and Parliamentary scrutiny to be on a high note.

Mr. Akomeah said the 137 seats for the NDC and NPP will affect membership of the committees in Parliament and therefore asked that the MP for Fomena, Andrews Asiamah Amoako steps down for a by-election to be conducted for him to formally join the NPP.

Meanwhile, MP for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed also stood for consensus building between both parties but disagreed with the suggestion for MP for Fomena, Andrews Asiamah Amoako to step down for a bye-election.

He said it will be a betrayal of his constituents since the people voted him into power as an independent candidate.
