Former Welterweight Champion Joshua ‘grand master the hitter’ Clottey, in an interview on GTV Sports+ ‘NIGHT OF TOTAL BOXING’ revealed exclusively that former Black Stars player and his childhood friend Laryea Kingston was the main brain behind his ability to acquire more properties especially building of his house.
According to him, the former footballer advised him to invest his earnings in boxing wisely to protect his future; an advice which he said he is very proud of and thankful for finding a positive friend in Laryea Kingston.
“It was a time I was talking to Laryea Kingston and he was like he was going to his site and I was confused, I didn’t understand what that meant at the time, so I asked him to explain then he said he is building his house so he is going to buy kenkey for the workers at the site, then I was like ok ok you are building a house so it was there he advised me to build a house too when I get money and ever since, that thing he said to me always ring bells in my mind. And so after I got my first money from the international fight which was 57,000 dollars and it was from the Miguel Cotto fight which I lost. So from there the first thing I did was to use the money to build a house and I feel so proud of myself because now me too I can say I am going to the site to buy kenkey for my workers” he said.
Clottey vs. Cotto
Clottey rose to prominence by winning his first twenty fights, including 14 by knockout. His performance set him up to fight Carlos Baldomir, in a title defense by Baldomir for the WBC International Welterweight title.
Clottey was winning until the 10th round, where he was penalized two points for an intentional head butt. After another clash of heads, Clottey was disqualified.
On June 13, 2009, Clottey faced Miguel Cotto in New York City at Madison Square Garden for the WBO Welterweight title. Cotto dropped Clottey in the first with a jab. Cotto was cut in the third round by an accidental head butt. Clottey’s combinations throughout the fight gave Cotto problems. Cotto emerged the winner with a controversial split decision.

Joshua Clottey (born October 6, 1977) is a Ghanaian former professional boxer who competed from 1995 to 2019, and held the IBF welterweight title from 2008 to 2009.
Born in Accra, Ghana, Clottey now lives in The Bronx, New York.
At the peak of his career, he was notable for his exceptionally durable chin, and was never stopped in any of his five losses.
His recent fight which he won was with opponent Azziz Mponda from Tanzania. Clottey won by TKO in round 8.
